My wife and I had an opportunity to stay in a different part of Maine than we normally do. Due to unexpected events last fall, my wife and baby (golden retriever) were able to join me for a quick fishing trip with Kevin Mckay and Mark Drummond. They both enjoyed the cabin and area so much, we all went up there again last week. What made this trip special besides spending time with my girls, was this would be the first time I fished this area all by myself. Having learned from the best (Kevin McKay), I was ready to attempt to catch LL Salmon and Brook trout in the Moosehead Lake Area.
As most of you are aware, there was lots of rains right before and when got there (ending the next day). That lead to very high waters. However, that wasn’t going to get me down and discouraged. I managed to get fish everyday and to get fish on dries, nymphs and streamers.
Most of you from Maine are probably familiar with Wilson’s Camps. I can’t say enough good things about the cabins and the staff/family.
I’m sure some Maine folks get bored of looking at moose but even though I usually see them when we head up there, I’m still amazed at these wonderful creatures.
During our morning walk, we unexpectedly ran into this guy very close up. We took a quick picture before he got very mad and slapped his tail and dove under.

I only spent about 15 minutes here, but did take some photos.
I tried Roach River for a little bit. I thought it was too high and fast but I’ve only been there a few times.
Managed to get a nice brook trout on a dry fly on Moose River. If my memory isn’t going, it’s the first place I ever caught a LL Salmon.

My wife and I needed a much deserve immediate break and Maine is still a little to cold for a vacation right now, so we decided to try something new (yes, we’ll be in Maine soon enough for our Maine trips). We opted to go to the Virginia mountains for the first time. Not knowing much about the region, we were immediately impressed with the beautiful scenery and isolation. We rented a place on top of one of the mountains with the George Washington National Forest only about 30 feet away. Nice long walk down the mountain leads to 2 different fishing rivers/runs for me (Black Run which is a native trout stream and Dry River). In addition, dry river runs fairly long. so I had plenty of spots to drive to. Local fly shop Mossy Creek provided me a great tip to fish Skidmore Fork. I will also say that they convinced me to book a Smallmouth Bass trip the next time I am there. Since it is only about 4 hours away, I think we will be going back again. Some pictures below.

Fishing jumping in skidmore fork, you’ll see it about the 20 second mark. Generally, you walk, wait and watch. I threw 2 times at him and he just miss the second one and got wise real quick.
